Lightfastness The colours of many old paintings have changed over the years, that is a well-known fact. This discoloration, sometimes even complete fading, can have various causes. There are pigments that due to a reaction with substances in the air undergo a chemical change, and therefore become, for example, darker or lighter. In this newsletter, however, we refer to another cause for the change of colours, namely light. Whether a colour will change or fade in time under the influence of light, and particularly its ultraviolet range, depends on the amount of light and the stability of the pigment.
