Celebration martini glass and fruit, olives,Happy New Year

Happy New it's time to celebrate!

I am writing down my accomplishment for 2009: my small victories and I am rejoicing in them. I hope you are celebrating also. The pounds lost, the closet cleaned, the child off to college all of your wonderful accomplishment for 2009: celebrate them now. I keep a journal and tomorrow I will write all the things that a follow through, refocus on what I missed and try to find the energy for the New Year.

Poppies of Color

Poppies of Color
Poppies of Color, painting by Delilah Smith

About This Painting: Poppies of color painted in happy colors on 140 lb watercolor paper.

A wet on wet watercolor tecnique was uesd here. The most basic watercolor technique is the flat wash. It is produced by first wetting the area of paper to be covered by the wash, then mixing sufficient pigment to easily fill the entire area. The pigment is applied to a sloping surface in slightly overlapping horizontal bands from the top down This worked well for the poppy painting.

Holihocks,Hummingbird, and Dragonfly, painting by Delilah Smith

About This Painting: I started this painting about 3 months ago and life got in the way and it didn't get finished. So today I sat down and painted with out stopping until I had it completed. I have two areas in my studio where I paint. One is a flat table with really good light, this is where I do my watercolors. As they say oil and water do not mix, so I need to be far away form the oil paints and the brush must be sperated at all times.

Staregaze Lilly, watercolor

The stargazer has added a new layer to rich legacy of lilies. On my website Art by Delilah I have painting in both oil and watercolor of Lillies. The floral symbol in ancient mythology and in folklore from around the world, the lily has appeared as a deeply spiritual and philosophical metaphor. but has grown in it's symbolism in the 20th century, the stargazer lily is a recent addition to the lily family, this exotic hybrid has rapidly risen in popularity to become one of the most adored and sought-after of all lily varieties. The lily family has traditionally represented innocence and purity.

State of Relaxation

State of relaxation was the title I gave to this painting while plien air painting on Little Travers Bay in Michigan. This sail boat was painted in plien air on a day that the rain was off and on all day long. I think the title reflex's the way I felt painting that day.
Today I am off to paint on a farm in Jackson county the day is sunny with no rain in site.
Me at my box or plien air easel.

En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.
Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century working in natural light became particularly important to the Impressionism. The popularity of painting en plein air increased in the 1870s with the introduction of paints in tubes (resembling modern toothpaste tubes). Previously, each painter made their own paints by grinding and mixing dry pigment powders with linseed oil.
It was during this period that the "Box Easel", typically known as the French Box Easel, was invented. It is uncertain who developed it first, but these highly portable easels, with telescopic legs and built-in paint box and palette, made treks into the forest and up the hillsides less onerous. Still made today, they remain a popular choice even for home use since they fold up to the size of a brief case and thus are easy to store

Pink Poppies

I think I was in the pink mode today painting pink poppies.

The earliest citations of 'in the pink' are from the 16th century and, at that time, the meaning was 'the very pinnacle of something', but not necessarily limited to health. The earliest example that I can find of pink being used with that meaning is from 1597 Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, 1597:
Mercurio: Why, I am the very pinke of curtesie.

The earliest citation I've found for 'in the pink' is from Leigh's Kensington Gardens, 1720:
"'Tis the Pink of the Mode, to marry at first Sight: - And some, indeed, marry without any Sight at all."
The 'pink of the mode', i.e. the acme of excellence of fashion, was a common early usage and continued to be used throughout the 19th century.

Asparagus No. 4-SOLD

Of course this is home grown Michigan Asparagus painted just for you.

Great artists have always enjoyed painting floral themes, whether capturing fields of wildflowers, exquisite blooms in vases or simply the perfection of a single fallen petal. Fruits in bowls also frequently appeal to the painterly eye.

Then there are vegetables, the supposedly less-exciting garden inhabitants: sometimes supple, often juicy, of all colors and shapes.I think it is the bright bold colors that keep me paintng vegetables again and again.

Artists who bring vegetables to the canvas seem just as appreciative of beauty — yet with an added sense of pragmatism, since vegetables not only look aesthetically pleasing, but they are wonderful to eat cooked or raw.

Inspiration of Roses

When the Rose is Faded by Walter de la Mare
When the rose is faded, Memory may still dwell on Her beauty shadowed, And the sweet smell gone. That vanishing loveliness, That burdening breath, No bond of life hath then, Nor grief of death. 'Tis the immortal thought Whose passion still Makes the changing The unchangeable. Oh, thus thy beauty, Loveliest on earth to me, Dark with no sorrow, shines And burns, with thee.

Sunflower Seeds

Watercolor painting of sunflower seeds and a little information on the use of sunflower seeds, after all all those wonderful flowers start here.

For commercial purposes sunflower seeds are classified by the pattern on the seed husk.If they are solid black they are used for oil and bird feed.If the Hull is striped like the ones I have painted they are used for food because they are low in oil content.Sunflower seeds can be sprouted and used in salads.

Sunflower sprouts are produced using the methods one would use for most seeds. Begin with hulled seeds, soak overnight in water. Then drain off the loose inner hulls (important!), and put the soaked seed in the sprouting environment - jars, cloth, or commercial sprouter, for about 1 day. Removing the inner hulls is very important, as if left in, they will spoil and ruin your batch of sprouts. The sprouting environment can be glass jars with plastic screen lids (propped up at 45 degree angle), or the seed can be placed between damp cotton washcloths, on flat-bottomed bowls or saucers.
