Harbor Side About This Painting: Today I was painting " en Plein air" with   Don Getz a well know watercolor journalism artist who is traveling the US painting small towns as he travel.  We are painting at Indian Rocks Fl this week and having a ball. Don is able to balance his work in one hand and paint. I have to use both and a clip to keep the paper from blowing in the wind. Air Line travel has become so difficult that I decided that I need to fins a different way to capture my travels. So I am giving this a try. Be doing these journal and taking photos I think I can then go back to the studio and paint larger works in oils. Art by Delilah I wet the watercolor paper and stretch it by taping it down to a board. While the paper is still damp I apply a background wash of raw siena.I make a light pencil drawing on the dry paper of where I want the boats to be. I then add a wash of of very diluted ultramarine. While the ultramarine is still damp I devlope the horizon line in a warm rose that mixes with the blue to make shades of lavnedar. Using a flat brush I add the mud banks in raw sienna. I also add some rose to the sky. Now that the sky and back ground are established I paint the masts of the sail boats and the hulls. I use a light burnt sienna for the downed sails. I begin adding the rigging and the morring pile. I add the shadows under the boats and darken the forground mud.     I put some gulls flying in the sky and work on more detail. The finished work. Living in Michigan all my life I am always surprised at what wonderful things other areas of the United States has to offer. Michigan has is Great Lakes and white sand beaches. I was told that I would be disappointed with the beaches in Texas when I came here. Galveston Island may not have great stretches of white sandy beaches but when I put my toe into the water it was bath warm . The beach had lines of colorful umbrellas and beach chairs and the children were running in and out of the waves. I could have rented a beach chair and watched the ocean but I wen out on one of the stone storm surge barriers and sat watching the tide come in and the sun set .
