How to make a Watercolor Painting of a Cow

Image
The Cow About This Painting: This painting is a little larger then most of my watercolors.  I painted it wet on wet in some areas to get a soft blend of hue. When I paint cows I always feel that the eyes are the important feature. 1. The eye is an orb shape and like a rain drop reflects light. You also have the cast shadow of the upper eye lid to think about.  2 Always retain a highlight in the eye – it is what gives it life. Even if you can’t see one, include a highlight. Once you have your highlight, protect it. You could add some white paint later, but it will lack the luminosity of white paper. 3 An eye is an indication of character in an animal; all the emotions can be portrayed throough is wet and shiny. Achieve a realistic look by using strong tone.  In many cases, the eye is the strongest part tonally of an animal.  5 Paint the eye in the reference and not the eye you think you see. The danger is that you create a caricatured eye and, r...

Cow Watercolor Art

Brown Cow About This Painting: I am back on the farm again today painting away. I always wonder when I was a kid how cows could walk with such big tummies? I still have not finished my large oil painting of a cow that I started for ArtPrize. When I found out I could  not get a venue to sponsor me I gave up on it. I will get back to painting it again soon. I just lost my motivation for awhile.  When I went to ArtPrize this year and I saw all the empty space that some venues had I just didn't understand why so many artist were turned away? As artist we must stay focused and motivated. I haven't stop painting, I just lost the desire to work on the big cow. I think I will finish it and take it to Ann Arbor art fair next year. I have been asked backed. Normally I would not take something that large to a street show, but what the heck it would be fun to see the reactions.Maybe i will be the year of the cow.. When the Cow Come Home Painting Demo

Image
Art by Delilah I have done a quick demo of how I painted the cows below. I start with 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper. I use masking tape to tape it down to a piece of hardboard. I buy a 4 x 8 sheet at Lowe's and have them cut it into 20x24 pieces. I work on several watercolors at the same time so when one is drying I can start on another one. Now I have the work taped down so it will not buckle when it is wet. I really like to work on 300 lb paper but for this demo I am using 140 lb. I sketch the cows and the landscape in that I want to paint. I use a test sheet of colors that I may want to use. The one on the right was used in another painting and I have a fresh one for new color mixes that I might want to use. I work from the top down so I don't get my hand in the wet paint. While I wait for the sky to dry I work on the foreground. Now that the sky is just damp I add the background trees and some to the darker areas to the cows. I develop the cow and keep worki...
