I paint Poppies often. I think most of the time I let the poppies paint them selves with the flow of colors in the petals. I often us the white of the paper for the background but on today's painting I have used some very light color washes. The key to Poppy painting is keep it simple and elegant. Watercolor requires patience. You must let the colors dry before adding more color or the colors will blend and become muddy. You want to keep those jewel bright colors in you painting. Poppies of Color About This Painting: Poppies of color painted in happy colors on 140 lb watercolor paper. A wet on wet watercolor tecnique was uesd here. The most basic watercolor technique is the flat wash. It is produced by first wetting the area of paper to be covered by the wash, then mixing sufficient pigment to easily fill the entire area. The pigment is applied to a sloping surface in slightly overlapping horizontal bands from the top down This worked well for the poppy painting. I think I was in the pink mode today painting pink poppies. The earliest citations of 'in the pink' are from the 16th century and, at that time, the meaning was 'the very pinnacle of something', but not necessarily limited to health. The earliest example that I can find of pink being used with that meaning is from 1597 Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, 1597: Mercurio: Why, I am the very pinke of curtesie. The earliest citation I've found for 'in the pink' is from Leigh's Kensington Gardens, 1720: "'Tis the Pink of the Mode, to marry at first Sight: - And some, indeed, marry without any Sight at all." The 'pink of the mode', i.e. the acme of excellence of fashion, was a common early usage and continued to be used throughout the 19th century.
